In spite of the city's conservative roots and image, The Advocate ranked Jacksonville as one of the "top 5 emerging cities of gays and lesbians." Evidence of this progressive trend can be witnessed by the burgeoning San Marco, Riverside or Avondale neighborhoods, where you can stroll to sample the eclectic charm, retro boutiques and visible gay culture. Jacksonville has maintained its uniquely southern flavor while attracting a significant population of gay men and lesbians from all regions, seeking a better economy, less expensive housing and, of course, the endless Florida sun.
